Episode 008: North American Wife Carrying Championship

 This is the Estonian Carry

This is the Estonian Carry

If you’ve ever longed to go for a run with your wife on your shoulders but thought better of it, we have JUST the event for you!  The North American Wife Carrying Championship goes down every fall at Sunday River in Maine.

Yup, you heard that right.  Wife carrying! It’s a sport that has dark roots going back to the 1800’s involving a sinister thief renowned for stealing and then carrying wives. The 100% consensual version that we explore on this episode started in 1992 in Finland and has been growing steadily ever since.

We talked to Sunday River Resorts events coordinator Caroline Ochtera to find out her take on the history of wife carrying, to get specifics about the event and we begin to understand the unique way the wives are carried - the Estonian Carry.  It’s not what you are probably thinking.

We also talk to two groups of competititors.  First, we talked to Elliot and Giana Storey who have been pretty successful at it and it has taken them to Finland to compete in the World Championships.  After that we talked to Wendy and Greg who have been competing at Sunday River for 10 years and have a lot of fun with it.

The event is held every Fall at Sunday River in Maine. For more information on the event go here: https://www.sundayriver.com/events/wife-carrying
