Episode 13: O.Henry Pun-Off World Championships
Apparently taking a day off is not something you should do when you work for a calendar company.
My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned because I couldn't concentrate.
Two wi-fi antennas got married last Saturday. The reception was fantastic.
Puns. Whether you like them or not this episode will make you feel full groan.
Each year punsters gather in Austin, Texas for the wordy cause known as the O. Henry Pun-Off World Championship. We caught up with those who make the magic happen.
To kick it we talked to Gary Hallock, former organizer now part of the emcee crew. A true legendary punster.
From Gary we move onto David Gugenheim, the current event producer/emcee & grizzled veteran of many PunSlinger rounds.
From the organizers we move onto some of the competitors. O’Henry there are some characters here.
Our first contestant is quite a dish. Alexandra Petri (I apologize for the dish-pun. My hands were tied.) a multi-time player/medalist in both of the contests. She is a professional writer and columnist for the Washington Post.
Then we head to Jerzy. Jerzy Gwiazdowski is a professional actor, director, bartender and multi-time champion of the Punderdome competitions in Brooklyn. If you want to hear more from Jerzy, check out his puncast, Punk Assed. Clever!
Last, someone who has Ben successful, Lex Icon aka Benjamin Ziek. Not only is he a hard core contestant (Most trophies ever!) he also is a rabid TV game show contestant & amateur wrestler. Multi-time champion of both Punniest of Show and PunSlingers. Follow his antics on Twitter.
These are the pros. We bow before their, occasionally cheesy, grateness.
If you’re in the Austin area, or you otherwise want to punish yourself, find out more about the competition at the O’Henry Pun-Off World Championship site!
